Moths in carpet


Moths in carpet can be a serious issue because if not stopped in time can damage your carpet. Usually the first time you notice a moth infestation in carpets is when a cupboard or tv stand is moved.

Small holes start appearing in dark undisturbed areas, such as in the corners or under furniture that gets little traffic. It is really common to not notice any moths at the early stages of the infestation, because its larvae are still small to human eyes and the carpet itself it is still untouched.

The female moth lays about 150 eggs at one time, and they will get nutrients from your carpet fibres. It takes about 5 days for the eggs to hatch. They feed on natural fibers and blends of natural and synthetic ones.

How moth look like? What do they eat?

They look like grains of rice. Their lifespan can range from a couple of months to 2 years depending on the availability of food (wool for example). Moths are attracted to keratin, found in pet hair: A dirty wool carpet or rug used by pets is paradise to moths.

Preventive methods to Do It Yourself

Regular carpet vacuuming, especially on areas you might normally not cover, such as behind heavy furniture, television set, under your sofa. If you are going to store rugs consider getting them professionally cleaned prior to the storage.

Usually a product with a component of pyrethrum is distributed onto the to the rug because kill larvae and the eggs. Moth balls and flakes are only a minor repellent and can cause health problems in humans and pets.

    Just discovered carpet moth damage and larvae in downstairs carpet in room measuring
    22 x 10 with no evidence yet in other downstairs rooms. What do you suggest.
