Carpet moths: be aware of them!

The life cycle of these insects can last from 2 months to 2 years.

The female moth lays about 150 eggs at one time, and they will get nutrients from your carpet fibres. It takes about 5 days for the eggs to hatch. They feed on natural fibers and blends of natural and synthetic ones. When hatched, they look like white grains of rice. Their life cycle various on the availability of food (ie. Wool). A dirty wool rug with cat or dog hair (moths love keratin found in your pets hair) will be like bringing a 6 year old toddler to a Mc Donald.

They thrive in warm, dark areas of carpet that does not get vacuumed as regular as open areas, under furnitures for example. Left unnoticed, they can eat a fist size of wool carpet in only a few weeks. So regular vacuuming helps stop a infestation.

Mothballs and flakes are only minor repellents and can cause health hazards to humans and pets.

The most effective and safest way to eliminate Carpet moths is to use a product that contains pyrethrum, a natural component extracted from dried chrysanthemum flowers. The extract contains about 50% active insecticidal ingredients known as pyrethrins. It not only kills the larvae but the eggs as well.
